A dramatic record of the most infamous man in U.S. history
This film was much more dramatic than I’d expected. I went in with the attitude that I was going to watch more of a documentary so I found myself wanting to just watch the actual interviews. Though…
once I saw that Howard was focusing more on the characters than the interviews I grew more interested. I found myself wondering what was fiction and what was reality so any film that can blur that line for me accomplishes a rare feeling which I can respect. Plus I thought the film would be lacking a climax so my skepticism grew, but after the scene with Nixon calling Frost while intoxicated in the middle of the night I was drawn into the character and found myself anxious for the final interview. Even though I already knew that Frost was going to break down Nixon I now wanted to see how and that’s the definition of fine film making; taking a weak part of the story and turning it into the story’s defining moment. It also echoed in this day and age because I always wondered what it’d be like to meet someone who you’ve demonized so much in your head (ahem Bush). Keeping an open mind with people you’ve grown to hate can be enlightening because you’re guaranteed to learn something, but most people choose to hate them in terms of black and white for fear of feeling compassion towards their enemy and therefore weakness. I’m glad Howard was able to show an unbiased portrayal of such an infamous figure because it shows that as a director his passion lies in film and not politics.
