Taylor Lautner Cast in Cancun

While Avatar may have people talking box office earnings this week we can’t forget about a little film called New Moon which made Avatar look like a straight to DVD release when comparing the opening weekend numbers.  Like it or not, there’s no denying that New Moon’s receipts have garnered the attention of many studio executives and it seems that the monetary success of the series has once again catapulted one of it’s leads into the Hollywood spotlight.  New Moon star Taylor Lautner has been cast in the upcoming vacation thriller Cancun, penned by actors turned writers Eric Champnella and Grant Thompson whose previous writing credits include Mr. 3000 and Eddie while their acting careers span cameos in shows such as 7th Heaven, The O.C., Lizzy McGuire, and Zoey 101.

The story follows an eccentric boy as he follows a girl to Cancun during their college break.  Things go awry when he is thrown into a world of drug smuggling and violence as the girl of his dreams and her friends are taken hostage by the cartel leaving only him to save them during their suspense driven Spring break.  While this sounds like an intense action adventure with plenty of beautiful scenery I can’t help but be weary of the players involved in the project as their past work spans teenage dramas and comedic sports tales with no experience in this genre at all.  Lautner’s talent in martial arts will be the building block for the majority of stunts in the film and this will be his chance to break out from the Twilight paradigm and show there’s more to his acting abilities than his lycanthropic counterpart has demonstrated so far.  The project is being produced by Taylor’s father, Dan Lautner, as their inaugural production effort through a partnership being sought through Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen (whom they met while Lautner was shooting New Moon).  Summit veterans Erik Feig and Gillian Bohrer will oversee production and a release date has not yet been determined.

Since I was a boy I've been completely obsessed with the world of film. My first viewing of Toy Story led me into the area of animation particularly, but since than I've branched out to become more of a cinephile than just an effects artist. I attended Rochester Institute of Technology for Network Security with a minor in creative writing where I elected to take mostly film related courses. I also attended Gnomon School of Visual Effects where I developed my passion for the illusion of effects in relation to films. Some of my favorite films include Children of Men, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Back to the Future, The Big Lebowski, The Fountain, Pitch Black, The Wackness, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Wizard of Oz, Clerks, The Abyss, and Into the Wild. I am a true fanatic of film and would like to use my involvement in Iconocritic.com to be introduced to others as passionate as I am about my pursuit. To name just a few of the people I've followed throughout my life that I've extracted so much aspired value from would have to be Stan Winston, James Cameron, Darren Aronofsky, Kevin Smith, Charlie Kaufmann, John Lasseter, and Joel and Ethan Coen because each and every one of them worked their way from the bottom to the top without relying on their family inherited connections to the industry; something I greatly admire.
